Cobeldick - Cobbledick

Cobeldick - Cobledick - Cobbledick

I am researching our family name COVEDUCK:  which is a Newfoundland variant, apparently not recorded elsewhere, of the surname of England Cobbledick, Cobledick. associated with the surname Cobbold, from the Old English personal name Cuthbeald which contains the elements famous and bold. (Barsley, Reaney). The distinguished history of this surname is interwoven into the tapestry of the history of England. Many sources have been used in the preparation of our history such as the Domesday Book, the Rasman Rolls (129)-1296). the Curia Regis Rolls, The Pipe Rolls, the Hearth Rolls, pariah registers, baptismals, tax records and other ancient documents and found the first record of the name Coveduck, in Lincolnshire, where they were seated from ancient times.

The Surname Coveduck, was found in the archives, the name was sometimes revealed as Cobbledick, Cubbledick, Cubbeldick, Cupeldik, Cubbeldyke, Cuppleditch, Cupeldicke, Cubbeldik, Cobeldyk, Copoldike, Copoldick, Copoldyke, Cobledicke, and these changes in spelling occurred even between father and son. It was not uncommon, for example, for a person to be born with one spelling variation, married with another, and for yet another to appear on his gravestone. Scribes spelt the name the way it sounded as it was told to them. From century to century spellings changed.

Guppy traced Cobbledick and Cobeldick also in Cornwall one of the historic Celtic Nations (along with Ireland, Wales, and Scotland). However, the chances are that the derivation of our family name got lost in history. When many of the Cornish came to the United States and Canada they were described simply as English.

Early documented instances transcribed from Micro Film, Church Records and other Archive Records I have found are listed below by date with the source record:
